Snow in my Eyeballs

Monday, February 28th, 2005

So Grandma Edith emailed me this morning to warn me of an impending snow storm, but I didn’t pay much attention because, well, it was gorgeous and sunny. Foolish, foolish me. On my way home from Jewett this evening it was dumping snow faster than I could shuffle through it and harder than I could see through. I’m going to go play in it, just thought I should express my amazement. Snow!

small update (around midnight):
picture me sitting alone on brick steps, bundled up puffy, silent, clumps of snow tumbling in lamp light (only and everywhere vertical movement), iced chai with whole milk, chewing ice and smiling…

The Weekend is Over?

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

This weekend actually fell into a wonderful pattern. Friday night was silent in a bizarre way…usually people wander by throughout the course of an evening, but Erin and I found ourselves alone in an empty dorm until about 1am. We seriously contemplated the possibility that we were the last oblivious survivors of a massive zombie invasion. Then, suddenly, the room filled with people! Allon and his two brothers, Seth (from Cushing), Claire, Nikki, Alex, John, Hannah…a whole group of cute cuddle-happy people converged upon the futon. It was so pleasant and the company lasted well into the early morning.

I didn’t sleep much before it was Saturday and Hannah, Erin, and I took breakfast at Babycakes. Hannah and I split the most delicious bread pudding ever. We scrounged through free boxes looking for articles for the play and then worked for a bit. John and I went to the HEL comedy show then to a surprise birthday party in Jewett. I chatted briefly with Seth at the party and again wished we could be better friends. John and I ended up in the 3rd floor Jewett tower with a lovely assortment of people, including Stephanie and Aaron from the Cloisters. We had some pretty amusing conversations about work, punctuated with the random diversions of general debauchery in the vicinity. It was actually a really great night, so good to get out of Noyes and surround myself with new people.

So next week is full of midterms and travel planning stress. How will I get to Amherst on Friday? What will I do in Boston for two days? What the heck am I doing about England??? It all begins as soon as I submit this post…oh man…

Friday Party Nights…

Friday, February 25th, 2005

That title sounds enticing, eh? Well, don’t get too excited. I mean, well, you can if you want to, but…

I just concluded another conversation with Sue from Microsoft. I would not say that it went poorly, though I did not warrant rave reviews. My war with the telephone jitters is at something of an impasse, with neither side gaining ground…not quite miserable, not quite articulate…but there may be a position available working with video. It actually sounds like an exciting project involving both research in the practicality of video streaming (consumer patience with download times, usefulness of content, etc.) as well as the production and distribution of said videos. Does that match up well with my major (the social legitimacy of digital space) as well as my personal dream job (music video production)??

I’m not letting my hopes climb any higher at the moment than saying I would really like this job.

So back to the rocking Friday night plans. I’m thinking about kicking back with a pencil and sketch pad and working out the Twelfth Night costumes. I’ve already been criticized by a few of my closer companions for not hitting the Mug (dank on-campus bar/dance place) or some equally sketchy parties. But I’m so happy here in the red chair listening to Venus Hum and sipping orange juice. Erin is missing again (I haven’t seen her in days). Maybe I’ll crack the door a bit and hope eccentric strangers wander in. This could be exciting.

Tally

Friday, February 25th, 2005

Excluding this post in the tally, I’ve made 23 posts. Of these:

* 11 entries (50%) begin with the word “so” or “ok, so”
* 4 entries (17%) begin with the word “I”
* 4 entries (17%) begin with the time (tonight, today, last night…)

This leaves only 4 entries that begin with their actual subject. Ouch.

Fire Trucks

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

Conversation in Classics today devolved into a discussion of fire alarms. Bert, our professor, was a house fellow for a few years, and apparently he worked out a deal with the Poughkeepsie fire department whereby he didn’t have to leave the dorm. And apparently Vassar is charged $10,000 for every false alarm the trucks respond to!!!

That makes me a little sick, because I’ve been through enough fire alarms to account for all four year’s of my tuition. It’s enough to lose sleep over.
