Media Cloisters

Friday, April 29th, 2005

I’ve decided I have the best job ever. I’ve taken to come here just to hang out, since I’m only allowed to work 9 hours a week (student employment cap for sophomores). The other day there were so many people here, at least three at each machine. So crazy.

So not only is it supposed to rain on Founder’s Day, they’re predicting a thunder storm (they being weather.com). I can’t decide if I want to throw a party in my room, in the Cloisters, or just go out and get muddy. I’ll probably mix the three and have a good enough time.

I can’t think of much to say right now because I’ve been spending a lot of time writing in what Alex calls my “Fetish Journal”, or the unruly journal I bound for Image/Text class. It’s due next Thursday, and I really want it to be beautiful. Going through all my old letters and collections has been a pretty powerful experience, so hopefully the binding will communicate some fraction of that.

Back to Andiamo.

Rain is icky

Wednesday, April 27th, 2005

It’s raining out now. I’m not too concerned, I only have to leave my room to go to econ and then it’s research and problem sets all afternoon. The rain actually facilitates responsible study time. I do, however, have a problem with the forecast of rain on Saturday. If it rains on Founder’s Day I’m going to throw a temper tantrum. Then I’ll throw a hang-out-and-pout party in my room. If I wanted rain I’d just go back to Oregon!

Otherwise the week is going well. I presented my Image / Text blog final project thing in class yesterday and it went over ok. Not the best project of all time, but I enjoyed it. That’s what counts? I’ve moved on to stressing about the Alexander final project that’s due next Tuesday, as I don’t seem to be able to get a hold of the videos I need to cut from.

The bathrooms in our side of the hall are disgustingly clogged, so I’ve been showering in 4-West. Our room is actually just on the east side of the divide, so it’s not that big a difference. However, this morning Samir was engaged in the loudest teeth-brushing I’ve ever heard. In the middle of my shower I thought ‘is someone else in the bathroom, and are they brushing their teeth or sanding something down?’ After getting out of the shower, drying off, and walking down to the sinks I found it only Samir brushing his teeth. So loud.

My class isn’t until 1:30, so I’m looking forward to a large balanced noon breakfast and some lounging time. I have no clue what I’m going to do next year with 9am classes.

Lime in the Coconut…

Monday, April 25th, 2005

The other night Erin, Travis, and I smashed open the coconut that Mom & Dad bought me when they were here. We hammered my screwdriver through the three eyes and poured the milk out, which Travis consumed ravenously. Travis then, with his bare hands, smashed the fruit against the mushroom pillar at the entrance to Noyes and it broke neatly open. We shared it with Hannah, Allon, and Chelsea, sitting on the passion pit table in Jetson. Passersby looked at us oddly. It was great.

The rest of the days have been filled by other, less exciting methods of avoiding work. Travis and I have been playing a lot of Warcraft. The other day Sanjay randomly jumped into our networked game and played with us. The day after that happened, Illian and Emma did the same thing. Suddenly it’s like a communal activity instead of the lazy, antisocial game Travis and I used to play. I’m really bad at it because my keyboard sticks a lot and I don’t have a mouse.

This is our last week of school! The weather is pretty gray, though, and people are depressed, which is annoying. I mean, upsetting. Both. Two of my classes were cancelled, so it shouldn’t be too tough for me. I just have to finish all of my projects–one due tomorrow, one next Tuesday–plus the essays and journal for Image/Text. The workload is made infinitely easier because econ and computer science just require you to understand the material, and luckily I do. None of this “prove what you know with an obscenely long essay / project” nonsense.

Last Normal Weekend!

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

Next week is our last full week and it’s capped off with Founder’s Day, which is the biggest party ever. We get carnival rides and outdoor movies and fireworks, among other things. So fun. But that makes this our last normal weekend, which is pretty ridiculous.

The Microsoft internship is out, and that’s all I’ll say about it. No corporation bashing here. But that means it looks like I’ll be heading for Texas if Margaret will still have me. That’s what I get for going all the way across the country for school…the opportunities that arise here just never seem to bring me home. I didn’t realize it, but leaving home meant just that, the end of childhood, free food, and frequent motherly hugs. A major tradeoff for an East Coast flavored education.

I feel like I haven’t written in this blog forever! That’s because I’ve been working on this one for my Image/Text class. It’s just a bunch of fragmentary images of Vassar College and I’m asking people familiar with the campus to respond with a guess at the picture’s subject and location. It’s proving a lot harder for my guessers than I anticipated, in part because I got a little crazy loose on campus with my camera and posted too many pictures. Sorry guys!

Anyway, Happy Weekend and (as it’s past midnight) HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRITTA!!

Room Draw, Summer, Sun

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

Room draw took place tonight. I chose a room on the first floor, it’s the biggest room in Noyes besides the president and house intern rooms, a 12 x 10 with a really high ceiling. I don’t know how I feel about it. I mean, I chose it over any other floor. I didn’t realize at the time how sketchy the bathrooms on the first floor are. Although it would be really sweet if I lofted my bed…

Sue Bishop emailed me about the Microsoft internship today. She still hasn’t made a commitment, but it sounds like they want to hire me. It is stressing me out more than it should…I mean, I have the standing offer in Texas…it’s just terribly upsetting to have the summer up in the air when we only have one more week of school.

One more week?!?

It’s so warm, though, it’s amazing. We took Image/Text class today outside, it was SO PLEASANT…we’re studying comics now, so just imagine having Michael Joyce read you Jimmy Corrigan in a field of warm grass under gnarly old trees. Vassar can be such a paradise.

Seattle? Texas? New York City? Ahhhh….
