What fun to encounter an old high school friend from little old Astoria! He was probably as amazed as you to have such a meeting!! I am glad it did promote a bit of nostalgia for the good old days! We have another cruise ship in--they are here instead of Mexico because of the swine flu scare. The river walk is FILLED with visitors. They may also see the column steps being installed at the column--they say we will have the steps in by the week-end which is marvelous. It has been a long time coming, but think it will be great. Am so glad all goes well--much love from your Astorian Grammy

It is always so good to read your blogs and learn how you are doing. It is certainly a good thing that you like the work that you are doing as it reads as though you are working long hours.
We are having a cruise ship in every Tuesday 2-8 as they don't want to go to Mexico because of the flu. There are 3700 passengers and 1800 crew. I think the whole ship load is walking on the river walk--have never seen so many walking as this time. The down town stores are happy--especially Penneys. I guess the no tax really gets to them!!
I went to Seattle over the week-end--Lucy was confirmed at church--a lovely ceremony. Then, yesterday, Bill took me on a tour of the building he managed a 11 1/2 million for--helps troubled youths--really beautiful--he is president of "YES" (Youth East side. He is also on a study group of U of Wash--has to do with brain activity of birth to 5 year olds. I took the train from Kelso and that is neat-and on time!
It was so good to see you when you came home. I have a brace specially built for compression fractures of the spine--will wear it 2 to 6 months. It has taken away the really difficult spasmodic pain but I have just moderate pain now.
It is really funny to see ALL of these people on the river walk--am glad it isn't raining--it was forecast to be 70 today but that won't happen. Am going to try to get the baseball game on--Astoria doing great again--playing in Grants Pass today against Happy Valley--you will probably have a report from your parents!!
Thankyou for letting me know a little bit of your life--and be careful on the bike ride!! Much love--Grammy from Astoria

I just finished reading your blog. I guess it is just as well I didn't read it earlier--have been handling my own problems and not realizing yours or Kelsey's. Bill's plane came through remarkably whole--that new kind of body was damaged where it hit the water (at 100 miles/hour)which was a good testimonial to whatever it was made of. From early reports, it sounds as the control of the gas to the motor was at fault-that is probably not a good description so don't quote me!
I guess I am doing O.K., have all sorts of meds to make bone repair more quickly but suspect golf is either a thing of the past or a long time in coming. Your parents have been wonderful--am not sure when I will finish all of the food prepared for me. Bill came down yesterday as he couldn't come mother's day so that was fun.
All in all, I am most fortunate to have such a wonderful family and am glad I am here in the condo with such good friends
I check your weather every day in D.C. just to see how you are doing! today has been a gorgeous day--had ships in the past 3 days--have 8 visits from one ship that has cancelled their Mexico stops for Astoria!! It will come in each Tues--can have 5000 passengers but only had 3000 this past week!
Much love to you--now and forever--Grammy

That is a lovely tale of your parents visit with you. I really did not have anywhere near the account of the visit so was delighted to read your version. I know it meant a great deal to them to be able to visit with you. We are having weird weather. It snowed out at Fred Meyers yesterday according to one of the clerks out there--not in Astoria as far as I could tell. Today is a beautiful sunny day and tomorrow is also supposed to be. Tonight, the Liberty is celebrating--going to duplicate the old picture of long lines of people waiting to enter on the opening in 1927. They have vintage cars out front and will picture the long lines tonight from atop the building across the seat. Then the performance will cost .25c to enter. It actually cost .10c in 1927 but it was decided that today's customer could afford .25!!
After much discussion, we will have Easter at the Shack--and will miss you--don't know about Kari or Emi and Genny. But I do hope for sun!! Much love--Grammy

Since we are supposed to have snow tonight or tomorrow again, I can certainly sympathize with your icy problems. The weather man keeps saying that only 3 times have we had much snow in March. I wish to remind him to look at Mar 9, 1951 as that is the year and time that I thought I might have to walk to the hospital to bear my child. there was at least a foot of snow at the time, but we did make it to the hospital. I was in the hospital for a week and there was still a lot of black left over snow when I came home with my precious baby.
It is wonderful that you are free for beach week. It is always my fervent wish that the whole contingency will be able to make it.
Two bald eagles were playing yesterday outside my window. What a beautiful sight their swooping and diving was. They are majestic birds..
Stay warm and dry!! Much love--Grammy

It is always good to read your blogs--and so glad that you are enjoying your work--and what more marvelous place to explore than Wash. D.C. I have reserved a place for us to enjoy on Wed night of beach week. It is our Seafood Center where we will help to prepare the meal and then enjoy it. Eric puts us all to work and he produces fabulous meals. I would just as soon have a bit warmer weather here, but it isn't as rainy as the weather man says so guess we should revel in that. Poor California and Arizona are so dry that it is scarey so we don't worry about that here in Astoria. Am going to a concert, so will bid adieu--much love--Grammy

It is so nice to read your blogs--and catch up a bit on what you are doing (which I don't understand, but probably wouldn't if you gave me a full explanation). I had a lovely Valentine's day--received words or Valentines from my four offspring, plus a lovely bouquet from your parents. Then a delightful night at the Liberty--first a reception in the McTavish room then a Jazz concert in the theater. Post Valentine's day, a luncheon with your parents and Kari and friend at Pig & Pan. We are having beautiful weather now--not warm, but marvelously sunny and great walking. Am so glad all goes well--and keep up the blogs!! Much love--Grammy

I had a great time watching the whole proceedings on the TV and recalling the 2 times we were there--Bill the 2nd time. That seemed so crowded but surely nothing like it was yesterday. We went to 2 dances--I think each was $100 and 2 was plenty. I asked Bill if he remembered anything that Nixon had said and he didn't, nor did I--but it was exciting to be there. For some reason, we had a lovely suite but was not in it very long. I had taken the dress that I wore to the first time we went--hadn't even tried it on--and it had been shrunken badly by the cleaners and I couldn't wear it--so had to rush out and purchase another in D.C. Subsequently, I gave that dress to Kelsey and she wore it to a high school dance. I took the first dress back to the cleaners and they did something to it and it fit again!! What an exciting time to be in D.C.--I am very hopeful for this administration!! Much love--Grammy

This is such an historic time--I am practically as giddy as being there to see it all. I had signed up to play bridge at 12:30 on Tuesdays for six weeks (this being the 3rd) so surely hope the speech will be done by then. We--Bill and your grandfather Blair and I were at Nixon's 2nd inaug with fantastic arrangements--the balcony immediately adjacent to the swearing in. That was before they changed the swearing in to the front of the capital where such a porch is not present. Even if it was Nixon, it was still a wonderful experience. I am hoping that all of the speeching will be done before having to leave the TV at 11;45 Tuesday--the 3 hour time difference is most appreciated.
I am glad that 24 was a good day and that the rest of the week and year will also be memorable. I surely have high hopes that this president will live up to all we hope and dream for. It is surely a big order, but already the world is thinking better of us for the election. It will be a fascinating time for you to live in D.C. Much love to you from sunny Astoria where the weather has been without rain for 5 whole days!! Grammy--Oh, and this afternoon, I am going to see "Grand Hotel" which is an oldie about 50 years oold--at the Liberty. We had a beautiful pianist last evening there
